New Advocates Urged to Serve with Integrity

The Chief Registrar, HW Sarah Langa Siu, August 19, 2022 presided over the enrollment ceremony of 60new advocates at the Judiciary headquarters. 

She congratulated the new officers of court upon joining the profession of the learned. “This profession comes with power, prestige, and status in society which places heavy responsibilities, we urge each of you to assist the Court in achieving fair and just decisions," she said.

The Chief Registrar urged the advocates to have a positive attitude, patience and hard work which will restore glory in the legal profession. "The road to success in the legal profession lies in the meticulous observance of ethics," she said.

She emphasized the legal principles of serving with honesty, diligence, professionalism, competence, transparency, compassion, and sobriety. She said that in her term as Chief Registrar she has never suspended any advocate enrolled during her term and urged them to uphold a high degree of professionalism. 

HW Langa encouraged the newly enrolled advocates to embrace mentorship programmes which will help them to learn from others and grow their network within the profession. Young advocates were also encouraged to have spouses and start up families they can share challenges within the profession.

The President Uganda Law Society, Ms Pheona Wall Nabaasa congratulated the newly enrolled advocates and advised them to embrace technology. She urged them to brand themselves as well as tapping opportunities upcountry saying the percentage of lawyers within Kampala is at 98%.

Ms Wall emphasized the importance of giving back to the communities through sensitization of the people about their rights and taking interest in legal aid services. 

HW Timothy Lumunye noted that there is a high rate of advocates forging documents required for enrollment certificates for instance, receipts of Uganda Law Society and the NSSF certificates. He cautioned them against such practices which, he said, were costly in the long run. 

Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP) moved a vote of thanks on behalf of the newly enrolled advocates. He appreciated the Law Council and the Judiciary for enabling a transformed process of enrollment for the lawyers. "Thank you for acting on our request very fast," he said.

The enrollment was also attended by the Uganda Law Council representative Ms, Peace Anthocon.
